The first ICPO logo was designed soon after the ICPO was established and depicted two Irish hounds in a Celtic knot. Celtic hounds symbolize hunting, healing and the Otherworld in Celtic legend. They were the traditional guardian animals of roads and crossways and were believed to protect and guide lost souls in the Otherworld. When first designed, the logo was plain and colours were added later. This logo represented the ICPO on our publications, information materials and notepaper for almost 40 years.
As the ICPO approaches its 40th anniversary in 2025, a new logo together with our new website will help us to honour our incredible story and incorporate elements of this story and our mission while also reflecting growth, as we look to the future. The new ICPO logo was inspired by an image designed by Robert Ballagh depicting light shining through bars. It was designed for a limited edition print to raise funds for an art competition organised by the ICPO in the late 1980’s.
Robert Ballagh’s design was used in information materials for the ICPO 30th Anniversary Conference which took place in Dublin Castle and was addressed by President Higgins. The Anniversary Conference image also included a meditation by William Power, a member of the Birmingham Six.
