Prisons conditions in Asian and Middle Eastern countries are very different from prisons in Ireland. Prisons are often severely over-crowded and prisoners may have to sleep on the floor with little other than a mat or in a dorm rather than cells. Food is generally inadequate and meals may only be provided once a day. It is common for prisoners to have to pay for most of their basic needs. Prisoners may have limited opportunities for making contact with their family and friends outside.

Not speaking the local language can be a challenge and legal processes may be slower, more difficult to understand and fall below the standard expected in Ireland.

Irish citizens who have been arrested or are in prison in another country are entitled to consular support from the nearest Irish Embassy or Consulate.
