Africa

Prisons conditions in African countries are very different from prisons in Ireland. Prisons are often severely over-crowded and prisoners may have to sleep on the floor with little other than a mat. Food is generally inadequate and meals may only be provided once a day. It is common for prisoners to have to pay for most of their basic needs. Prisoners may have limited opportunities for making contact with their family and friends outside.

Legal processes may be slower, more difficult to understand and fall below the standard expected in Ireland.

Irish citizens who have been arrested or are in prison in another country are entitled to consular support from the nearest Irish Embassy or Consulate. If your family member/friend in prison in an African country please contact us for further support and information. We work closely with Embassies and Consulates across the continent and with the Department of Foreign Affairs.
